Frequently asked questions

How do I care for my candle?

When lighting your soy candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt all the way to the sides of the jar. This will ensure a consistent burn and will avoid any tunnelling of the wax. It is also important to always trim your wick to 1/4 inch before relighting each time. If the wick is too long, the flame may have difficulty staying lit. The recommended maximum burn time of a Common Sense candle is 3 hours. For added safety, ensure the flame is extinguished as the wick nears the base of the jar or as the wax is close to being completely melted.

How do I store my candle?

All candles will discolour or fade when they are exposed to strong light for extended periods. Wherever possible, do not display candles for long periods in direct sunlight or other strong illumination. Store candles in a cool, dry place. Wax will soften in temperatures over 28°C (82°F). This may affect the quality and appearance of your candles.

How can I burn my candle safely?

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Don’t place a burning candle near clothing, books, curtains or anything flammable. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Place a Common Sense candle on a stable and heat-resistant surface. Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart from one another. Please refer to our safety sticker on the bottom of each candle for further information.

What is your return policy?

Orders are personally packed and checked before leaving our workshop. In the event that a mistake has been made, and the wrong candle has been received, this will be replaced at no cost to you. Unless a defective or incorrect product is received all orders are final.

My candle has surface imperfections. Is this normal?

During temperature changes, soy wax will sometimes release excess oil. This often happens after shipping across the country and is known as ‘sweating’. This will not affect the candle, nor usually reappear after the initial burn. To remove the oil, use a paper towel to gently wipe it clean. Common Sense candles are all hand poured and not massed produced. Although every effort is made to ensure consistency, each candle is unique. When using natural vegetable wax, sometimes you may notice darker patches or wet spots in your container. This is not a fault of the candle – simply a characteristic of natural soy wax where the wax has not 100% adhered to the glass. This does not affect the candle in any way. It’s how you know it’s completely natural soy wax.

What is the burn time of Common Sense candles?

The minimum burn time for our candle jars is approximately 50 hrs. Our candle tins are 25-30 hrs. Much longer burn times can be achieved by following the candle safety guidelines.
